Introduction

The Gecko5Modular/Education is a new take on an open hardware educational platform. The ideas of the Gecko5Education/Modular are based on the open hardware ULX3S board, the GECKO4Education line of boards, and the recently developed Leguan development board. This is a small (60.6x100 mm) standalone FPGA board for education, research and general purpose. It’s open source and open hardware.

There exist two versions of the board, namely the GECKO5Education (V3.1 on branch V3.1), and the GECKO5Modular (V2.0 on branch main). The Kicad design files and BOM can be found here. The GECKO5Education is in essence the merging of the GECKO5Modular with the perifAddOn board. So both boards are pin-compatible, except for back-side of the boards.

I, Dr. Theo (Ties Jan Henderikus) Kluter, developed this platform during my sabbatical at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) and as preparation for my new courses at the EPFL. The prototypes were financed by:

  1. The Processor Architecture Laboratory (LAP) headed by Prof. Dr. Paolo Ienne.

  2. The Institute for Human Centered Engineering (HuCE) as internal research project.

Many thanks to their contributions!

The GECKO5Edition-boards (black-edition) used at EPFL (100 boards) were financed by:

The GECKO5Edition-boards (blue-edition) used at the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) and Master in Biomedical Engineering (BME) (150 boards) were financed by (in alphabetic order):

Many thanks to their contributions!
